There’s a bit of his native Irish countryside in Dermot Kennedy’s music. He grew up in Rathcoole, just outside Dublin and still next door to the wilderness of County Kildare, and you’ve got that rustic acoustic beauty in his guitar-led music – with a fair share of hip-hop inspired production, too. Making these two worlds collide is what he loves, he says, and it’s got him on everyone’s radar. In 2016, he performed his song ‘After Rain’ on stage at a Glen Hansard gig. A few dozen million streams on Spotify later, he’s in Time Magazine and Wonderland, and now he’s caught the attention of rap producer and Kanye West collaborator Mike Dean. Together, the Irish lad who grew up listening to Bon Iver and Dean have just released a mixtape that bring together urban beats and rugged, poignant folk. Don’t believe us? Hear it for yourself.
